Football in Hamburg under National Socialism: A History Romanticized for Decades | Exhibition
The primary focus of this exhibition is football in Hamburg, in all its aspects. How were the sport and its clubs changed by National Socialism and the war? The individual stories of players and club personnel, along with portraits of particular clubs, highlight the effects of Nazi sports policy, including bans and persecution, as well as the complicity of those involved. The later (and long overdue) reappraisal of what clubs and associations had done under National Socialism is also considered.

Leipzig was an important armaments and business location before and during the Second World War. Between 1939 and 1945, around 75,000 men and women, girls and boys from all parts of Europe were forced to work there, and from 1943 onwards, concentration camp prisoners were also brought to Leipzig and used as forced labourers to meet the steadily increasing demand for labour in armaments production. A total of six sub-camps of the Buchenwald concentration camp were established in Leipzig and the surrounding area. The male and female prisoners had to work under the harshest conditions for armaments companies such as Hugo Schneider Aktiengesellschaft (HASAG) and Erla-Maschinenwerke GmbH.

Stories of persecution during National Socialism and the HSV | Tour
The history of the Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV) is closely linked to Hamburg's Grindel district, the city’s historically Jewish district, and its surroundings. During the tour, biographies of persecuted HSV members will be told and their fates will be used to explore topics such as persecution, resistance, flight, deportation, and murder during National Socialism. In addition to Stolperstein (stumbling stones), there are also memorial plaques and places named after the persecuted that help us remember these stories. Therefore, the ongoing struggle for remembrance is also an important part of the tour.
The tour is organised in cooperation with the Netzwerk Erinnerungsarbeit and a part of www.fussballunderinnerung.de - a EURO24 project.
Guides: Netzwerk Erinnerungsarbeit (an association of people from HSV)

Remembrance work in football – in conversation with Paula Scholz from the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial | Evening Event
Whether it’s the HSV Remembrance Network or the Holocaust memorial days organised by the St. Pauli fan shop – remembering the victims of National Socialism plays a major role in the context of football. At the Stadthaus historical site, we talk to Paula Scholz, who is responsible for adult education at the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial, about why many people in football are politically involved and do remembrance work.

On the move: Jewish women and men in football | Evening Event
It has long been recognised that women are sometimes more successful than men in football. However, less so who is Jewish in the male-dominated domain. On the occasion of the 2024 European Football Championship, we are focusing on Jewish female footballers as well as their male colleagues. What challenges do they face? Do the experiences they have in the field have an impact on their identity? Can religiosity be combined with a tight training schedule? And how can equal opportunities and inclusion be further expanded in the future?
Our renowned guests provide insights into their personal experiences and discuss how football can serve as a platform for integration, empowerment and social change.
Guests: Alon Meyer (President Makkabi Deutschland e.V.), Katharina Kiel (Technical Director Eintracht Frankfurt) and N.N.
The discussion will be moderated by Jacqueline Dreyhaupt
