Leipzig was an important armaments and business location before and during the Second World War. Between 1939 and 1945, around 75,000 men and women, girls and boys from all parts of Europe were forced to work there, and from 1943 onwards, concentration camp prisoners were also brought to Leipzig and used as forced labourers to meet the steadily increasing demand for labour in armaments production. A total of six sub-camps of the Buchenwald concentration camp were established in Leipzig and the surrounding area. The male and female prisoners had to work under the harshest conditions for armaments companies such as Hugo Schneider Aktiengesellschaft (HASAG) and Erla-Maschinenwerke GmbH.
